Why does my sink have grey marks from pans?

A bright farmhouse kitchen with a white butler sink set into a wooden worktop, a brass bridge tap and a window above.

The answer

Grey streaks on glazed ceramic are often metal deposited from pans and utensils rather than true damage. A non-abrasive cream cleaner suitable for glazed surfaces often lifts them. Test a small area first, avoid harsh scouring powders and hard pads that can dull the glaze, and follow the manufacturer's care guide for approved products. Rinse thoroughly afterwards, and avoid leaving metal pans sitting in the bowl for long periods.
