Should I choose a single or double bowl?

A bright farmhouse kitchen with a white butler sink set into a wooden worktop, a brass bridge tap and a window above.

The answer

Choose a single bowl if you wash large pans and trays, because nothing blocks the space, and a double bowl if you wash mostly by hand and like to rinse separately, though each basin is narrower. If you own a dishwasher, a single large bowl is often more useful, because the awkward items are the ones that need room. A one-and-a-half bowl sits between the two. Think about what you actually washed by hand in the last week, and check the cabinet width.
