How do I measure for a butler sink?

A bright farmhouse kitchen with a white butler sink set into a wooden worktop, a brass bridge tap and a window above.

The answer

Measure the available width and depth, the worktop height, the cabinet's internal width and any obstructions such as pipes, sockets, windows or shelves. Take each measurement twice and write it down in one unit, centimetres or millimetres. Then compare your figures with the external and internal dimensions in the maker's specification, not with a general size description from a shop, because names such as compact or standard are not standardised and sizes differ between makers.
