How can I avoid chipping a ceramic butler sink?

A bright farmhouse kitchen with a white butler sink set into a wooden worktop, a brass bridge tap and a window above.

The answer

Lower heavy pans gently instead of dropping them, avoid banging tools or cast-iron cookware against the bowl, and consider a soft mat or washing-up bowl for delicate or heavy items, lifting and cleaning it regularly. Handle the sink carefully during delivery and installation too, and keep it in its packaging until the cabinet is ready. A chip in the glaze can be hard to disguise and may collect dirt, so prevention is better than repair.
