Measuring and fit

Measure the width of the space available twice and write the figure down in one unit.
Measure the depth of the worktop and cabinet from the wall to the front edge.
Measure the worktop height from the floor and consider whether the working height is comfortable for the people who will use it.
Measure the cabinet's internal width, allowing for any frame, rail or divider that reduces clearance.
Note the position of pipes, sockets, windows, shelves and anything else near the sink.
Compare your measurements with the external dimensions in the manufacturer's specification.
Check the internal bowl width, length and depth against your largest pan or tray.
Allow a small margin for uneven walls, sealing and manufacturing tolerances.
Check that the sink can be carried through doors and corridors to the kitchen.

Decide on a material after reading the pros and cons of each and the maker's care guide.
Think about how likely heavy items are to be dropped and whether chip resistance matters to you.
Consider your local water hardness and how well the finish will hide marks.
Choose between single, double or one-and-a-half bowls based on what you wash by hand.
Allow for your dishwasher use when deciding how much bowl space you need.
Look at a sample or the product in person where possible, because colours differ in real light.

Find the published unladen weight of the sink.
Read the manufacturer's guidance on the cabinet or support structure required.
Inspect any existing cabinet for damp damage, movement or weakness.
Check that the floor is firm and level and the wall can take fixings.
Ask the worktop supplier how to seal cut edges against moisture.
Plan how to lift and move the sink safely with enough people and suitable equipment.

Check how many tap holes the sink has, if any, and where they are.
Check the diameter of the tap holes and the spacing between them.
Choose a tap type that suits the holes or the wall: pillar, monobloc, bridge mixer or wall-mounted.
Check the spout reach, height and swivel against the bowl and any window or shelf.
Check that the tap does not block or interfere with any overflow slot.
Confirm the waste outlet size and choose a compatible waste.
Confirm whether the sink has an overflow and that the waste supports it.
Check that the trap and pipework will fit beneath a deep bowl inside the cabinet.

Decide between exposed-front, sit-on, inset or undermount and confirm the sink supports it.
Check that your worktop material suits the chosen mounting style.
Obtain the manufacturer's installation guide before purchase and share it with your installer.
Arrange a qualified plumber or installer, and confirm the local requirements, such as the water fittings regulations that apply where you live.
Plan the sealing between sink, worktop and wall with products suited to your materials.
Keep the sink in its packaging until the cabinet is ready.
Test the taps, waste and overflow for leaks after fitting and look again after a few days.

Ask the seller for the full written specification before ordering.
Check the warranty terms, including any installation requirements.
Check the returns and damage-in-transit policy.
Keep receipts, the installation record and the care instructions.
Find out which cleaning products are approved and which to avoid.
Plan a simple routine: rinse, wipe dry, clean the strainer and check seals regularly.
